Registering a Birth in Portugal

Documents Required

Proof of Identity
  • Valid Digital Mobile Key (Chave Móvel Digital) or Citizen Card with authentication capabilities.
Marriage Certificate
  • If the parents are married, only one parent may complete the registration online. If the parents are married and the marriage is already registered in Portugal, then you do not need to upload or submit a marriage certificate during the online birth registration. The system will automatically verify it. If not married, both may be required to confirm the paternity acknowledgment. If the marriage took place abroad and is not yet registered in Portugal, then you may be required to register the marriage first with the Portuguese civil registry, or be asked to provide a valid foreign marriage certificate, potentially with an apostille/legalisation and translation if not in Portuguese.
