What is it?

Pregnancy Subsidies:

Pregnant women (this applies to Portuguese or foreigners with a residence permit) - are entitled to free pregnancy monitoring consultations. Both mothers and fathers can take time off work to attend these appointments.

Foreign pregnant women who only have a residence permit in Portugal for up to 3 months or less, have access to the same care in the National Health Service, however, at a cost.

Antenatal allowance - The antenatal family allowance is a cash benefit granted to pregnant women resident in Portugal from the 13th week of pregnancy, it compensates for the additional costs during pregnancy.

The documents required for Antenatal Allowance

Social security provides a benefit awarded for 6 months from the month following that in which the 13th week of pregnancy falls until the birth.

The prenatal benefit must be requested by the pregnant woman or on her behalf by her legal representative. You can apply for prenatal benefit from the 13th week of pregnancy or within 6 months from the month following birth. Subsidy for clinical risk during the pregnancy

It is a compensation assigned to the worker, during the pregnancy, aiming to replace the work income loss, in the case of clinical risk for the pregnant woman or unborn child (the child who is yet to be born). You can be a beneficiary if you are: a dependent employee discounting for Social Security self-employed discounting for Social Security Beneficiary on a pre-retirement situation who exercise an activity integrated on any of the above-mentioned schemes Beneficiary who receive unemployment benefit or social unemployment benefit (but the unemployed benefit will be paused during the clinical risk subsidy) Beneficiaries receiving an invalidity, old age or survivor’s pension, who are working and with a pay statement at social security.

You must apply for it within six months from the first day of the impediment to work. If you submit the request after this period, but still during the period in which you are entitled to receive the allowance, the days of delay won’t be paid. To be entitled to the allowance, the beneficiary must meet the following conditions Benefit from a warranty period of 6 civil months with a pay statement on the 1st day of impediment to work. Benefit from the correspondent licenses provided on the Labour Code, in the case of dependent employees or for equivalent periods on the remaining cases. Subsidy, Social benefit for specific risks

If workers who have given birth or are breastfeeding are exposed to risks which jeopardise their health and safety, and the employer does not provide them with a safer task, they can apply for this benefit. Requirements for social benefits for specific risks: be a resident in Portugal (or treated as a resident); pursue a professional activity; the woman or her household unit must not have movable assets worth more than EUR 122.222,04 (240 times the value of the IAS* (social support index)); each person in the household must have a monthly income equal to or less than EUR 407.40 (80% of the IAS*). Where these conditions are met, the application can be submitted within 6 months from the date of the event giving rise to the protection; it will be paid out for the period necessary for preventing the specific risk. Family Allowance

To compensate for necessary expenses related to sustain and educate children and youth, the parents, legal representatives' institutions or the individual (if older than 18) can request for a family allowance. Children and Youth can have access to it by reuniting the following conditions: If they are residents in portugal If they do not work except if they have a job during school holidays If the household belongs to the required income group (you can consult the following link to calculate your income group - consulte os escalões de rendimentos e forma de cálculo do valor de referência) If belonging to a household in which the mobiliary assets are not higher than 122222,04 euros (240 times higher than IAS for 2024)*. Families constituted by a single parent - when the pregnant person lives by herself and receives the prenatal allowance or when the children and youth belong to a single parent family the allowance goes up 35%. Families that have two or more children – the value of the allowance can go up but only for the children younger than 3 years old.
